Driving targeted traffic to your website can sometimes seem like a ginormous task, especially when you're first starting out in online entrepreneurship. Many newbies start out by building a great looking website and then just sit around and wait for the visitors to come. It's the whole Field of Dreams thing, If you build it, they will come. But it doesn't work that way. If you want your website to attract 2,000, 5,000 or even 10,000 visitors a day, you've got to develop a strategy or plan to actively and aggressively seek out that targeted traffic and continually give all those visitors a reason to come back.
Dec 11, Is Santa a marketing guru or just a pawn?

<a href="http://imarketingwatch.com/answers" target="_blank"><img src="http://imarketingwatch.com/answers/dec2008.png" alt="Answers eMagazine" align="left" border="0" height="219" width="179" /></a>The December edition of <a href="http://imarketingwatch.com/answers" target="_blank"><em><strong>Answers eMagazine</strong></em></a> arrives on virtual newstands today. This month's cover story is, <em><strong>"Santa: Your Marketing Guru."</strong></em> It's a cute article written by a contributing author, but I'm not really digging the whole Santa-as-a-marketing-guru-thing.

I think Santa is really just a pawn in an evil plot designed by marketers all over the world to get our money.
<h3>Santa's Rotten Kid Problem</h3>
How many parents go out and buy gifts in the name of "Santa" just so that their children will get exactly what they asked the fat guy for when they sat on his lap two weeks prior?

Especially parents who have rotten kids! You know... the one's that deserve and get coal in their stockings.

Parents know their kid is getting coal, but they go out and get the big present anyway and switch it out after Santa leaves. No parent wants to see the disappointment in their child's face when they awake on Christmas morning to find that the man in red has let them down.

It just breaks your heart!

I mean Santa is a good guy, but maybe not the brightest bulb in the factory... if you know what I mean. Doesn't he realize that parents are gaming the system for their rotten kids?

I think Santa needs to put some kind of magic spell on the coal so that it can only be removed by the offending child. That would teach everyone a lesson.
<h3>What about all the Santa Merchandise?</h3>
And then there's all the merchandising revenue that Santa's missing out on. During the holidays you can barely go anywhere and not see some kind of likeness of Santa.

His face is everywhere!

And does he see one penny of that revenue? No!

After all, he's got elves to pay, toys to build, and reindeer to feed. He should be getting a share of the merchandising revenue.
<h3>What happens after Christmas is over?</h3>
<img src="http://imarketingwatch.com/images/turkeysmall.png" alt="Thanksgiving Turkey Guild" align="right" border="0" height="256" width="150" />And then look at what happens when Christmas is over... Santa gets kicked to the curb until all those evil marketers need him again next year.

If Santa were smart, he'd do an end-run around the marketers and create joint ventures with St. Valentine, the leprechauns, and the Easter Bunny. He might even be able to strike a deal with the Halloween Characters Union and the Thanksgiving Turkey Guild.

That would really show all those marketers who's boss!
<h3>Santa is a pawn!</h3>
In short, I think Santa is just a dupe... a chump... a marketing pawn!

He works all year long to build toys for the good boys and girls, does a ton of public appearances, travels all over the world, maintains his public image impeccably, and gives, gives, gives. Yet Santa isn't compensated for any of his work... unless you think that the joy and happiness of children is compensation.

It's time for Santa to stand up and take his rightful place in the marketing world!

Oh, by the way... Don't forget to subscribe to <a href="http://imarketingwatch.com/answers" target="_blank">Answers eMagazine</a>!

In the Info Product Dashboard, I teach a method for doing a 12-product survey. I KNOW this method works. The problem or challenge is, if you don't have a list, WHO do you get to take the survey? Let's drill down on this problem some. One way of doing the survey is to find forums that target your market and get those people to take your survey. If you're in a small niche, you have a pretty decent chance the members will be happy to do it. However, in some niches, it's not so easy to get people to take the surveys.

It's like building a house. The more solid the foundation is, the more stable the entire structure will be!
Sep 26, Internet Marketing Reviews

I'm a strong believer in doing your homework BEFORE you buy any product... especially an internet marketing product. That's why I've put together is special section of my website dedicated to internet marketing reviews. Here's a little something that you may not know about most of the internet marketing reviews that you find online... they are prewritten by affiliate marketing managers! That's right! It is a very common practice for affiliate program managers to prewrite positive reviews of their product (or pay someone to write a positive review) and make them available to their affiliates. Many affiliates then post the candy coated reviews offered by the affiliate program to their website along with their affiliate link. It's all a ploy to generate affiliate revenue with the review... prewritten reviews are not genuine reviews of the product!

Sep 3, Building Rapport Through Value

Whenever you write any sort of content, one of your main goals is to build rapport with your target audience. Rapport building strategies can come in all kinds of forms, like infusing your content with personality, telling jokes, and appealing to emotions, but the easiest way of building rapport with your target audience is through offering value. Not only are you building rapport through value, but you are also using one of the best preselling methods available. Giving your visitors something of value is the ultimate pre-seller, regardless of the format. Not only does it build rapport, it also warms them up and puts them in a ready to buy frame of mind.

I'm absolutely sure that you've heard the phrase Content is King. Well, if content is King, then pre-selling is even more important. It's kind of like the Emperor or Pharaoh of content because preselling is crucial to making money with your content. Without acquiring the skill of pre-selling, writing content is a waste of time for the internet business. After all, we all write content so that we can gain traffic and earn revenue in one form or another. Pre-selling is really your major ticket to earning revenue from your content.

Jun 13, MWR Helps You Focus

It's easy to lose your focus when you're developing your site. You start writing your content -- one idea leads to another, and then another. Your excitement builds, and before you know it you've run your website goals into a ditch. I've done it before -- most experienced internet entrepreneurs have. Losing focus costs you a lot of time. You spend a lot of time engaging in activities that aren't directly related to your website goals. Then the lightbulb goes on and you realize that you've lost your focus. Now you have to direct all your energy to trying to correct the content you've already written and re-focus it. You can avoid wasting all that time, energy, and money if you simply remember your most wanted response.

I was getting ready to write a review for a particular marketing product and decided to do a search for other reviews first. I was curious to see what other people thought of the product. When I searched Google, I found four full pages of reviews. Although a little surprised, I still wanted to check them out to see how many were genuine reviews and how many were simply ploys by affiliates to sell the product. In other words, how many affiliates would write glowing reviews for the product just so that they could recommend the product?

Nov 6, Amazing Article Formula Question

Hi Chris,

I just finished reading your "How To Make Your Article..."

Excellent.

One question re SEO. Do I focus only ONE keyword per artcile? How many times should it appear and where? I'm assuming more in the opening paragraph and title? How many hyperlinks should I have on the keyword? Should my bio be unique to the keyword? That would result in LOTS of different bios...

----------

Excellent questions! When I write articles, I usually choose just one keyword per article. You can try more than one, but I wouldn't do more than two or three. If you choose too many keywords, it makes it really difficult to get the keyword density right and also write a readable article. Remember, write for people first and search engines second.

When it comes to where those keywords should appear and how many times, everyone has their own opinion. I don't claim to be an seo expert by any stretch of the imagination. Because seo rules and algorithms so frequently, I choose to use a more general tactic that will serve me well regardless of the changes. I go for overall keyword density rather than specific keyword locations with one exception... I always put my keyword within the first sentence of the first paragraph -- usually within the first four or five words. As you mentioned, I also put my keyword in my title.

As far as hyperlinks go, I try to hyperlink my keyword once or twice. If you have too many hyperlinks then article directories and your targeted readers will find it irritating. Usually, my only hyperlinks are within the resource box at the end of the article. I try to make those keyword hyperlinks whenever possible. In answer to your question, I do use slightly different resource boxes with each article because I include the entire resource box when I test my article's keyword density.

Hopefully that tackled all your questions... Let me know if you need more information.

Jul 12, IBSoftshop Review Fallout

I'm really surprised at how much attention this review has gotten from those who've been exposed to the product/owner and from those associated with the product.

My only intention in writing the review was to warn others of the experience that I had with this product. Since posting the review, I've been contacted by dozens of people who have had a similar experience.

Unfortunately, I've also been threatened with a lawsuit over the review. I don't think I've done anything wrong in stating my opinion.

In addition, I've also posted the email responses that I received with regards to my original purchase. Some have suggested that this is inappropriate... but I think it speaks to the validity of my opinion and experience. Email messages become public record as soon as you hit the "send" button because they can easily be intercepted. Therefore there is no expectation of privacy when email is used.

Perhaps I've just made too much of this whole thing... you be the judge.

May 10, Blog It Test

Okay, now I've finally gotten the whole blog started and I have a somewhat mixed review.

First of all, I really like that SBI takes each page I add to this site and automatically includes it in the xml feed and pings it.

That's totally awesome and a great time saver!

But this thing isn't a exactly an intuitive interface.

First of all, I didn't realize that it uses my page meta descriptions as the descriptions for each blog entry... it kind of looks ugly now, but it will work out eventually.

Also, it you update a page on the site and re-load it, it will appear in the blog unless you specifically ask it not to (which I forgot).

All in all, I think the whole automation thing makes up for any shortcomings, but we'll see how it all shakes out in time.
